Jim Zeman specializes in labor and employment law with a sub-specialty in certain aspects of education law, serving a wide range of mainly management clients in both the public and private sector.
Jim’s employment and labor law practice includes collective bargaining in both private and public sectors; appearances on behalf of employers in administrative tribunals (EEOC, NLRB, MERC); labor arbitrations; grievance administration; state and federal litigation at the trial and appellate level involving FMLA, ADA, discrimination, wrongful termination, sexual harassment and civil rights claims. He also has extensive experience negotiating severance packages.
Additionally, Jim devotes significant time to helping clients avoid costly litigation by guiding them through difficult situations involving interplay among an array of employment related statutes (e.g. ADA, FMLA, Worker’s Compensation). Jim has addressed complex issues of education law on behalf of a public institution of higher learning and has successfully litigated a territorial dispute between two community colleges. He has handled several administrative complaints with the U.S. Department of Education.
Jim has served as outside counsel to municipalities on a variety of labor and civil rights matters, most recently for the City of Detroit in defeating a union’s effort to have the circuit court enjoin the City from participating in the formulation of plans for regional transportation.
In addition to his labor and employment expertise, Jim has extensive experience in complex commercial litigation at the trial and appellate levels, including cases involving covenants not to compete and non-disclosure issues and claims of unfair competition, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty and successor liability.
